TURKEY’S POLICIES IN THE SOUTHERN CAUCASUS AND REGIONAL SECURITY MECHANISMS
Abstract
The disintegration of the USSR at first seemed to offer a vastarea for the growth of Turkey’s influence not only in the Caucasia region,but also in Central Asia. Turkey enthusiastically welcomed the three newlyindependent countries – Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia. While Turkeywas able to forge a wide ranging level of cooperation with Azerbaijan andGeorgia, it has been unsuccessful with regards to Armenia. The authorcontends that establishing ties with Armenia in the same vein as withAzerbaijan and Georgia, and also the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakhconflict will have far-reaching implications for the Caucasia region as awhole. Continuing tensions within Turkey and tensions in the wider regionpresent both domestic and foreign policy challenges for the country, andprovide impediments to its aim to become a reliable energy transit routefor the whole region
