Music in Ottoman Higher Education
Abstract
The Imperial Edict of Gulhane (1839) brought unprecedented reforms to the Ottoman higher education. With the foundation of modern educational institutions, education of arts and sciences began to gain a more westernized look. During this transition, music education secured a better position in these modern colleges. The purpose of this study is to give an account of music education offered at Ottoman Higher Education institutions during the post 1839 reformation era based on the information revealed by the archive records of the Ottoman Ministry of Education.
