Abstract
Shugul is the name given to hymns with Arabic lyrics in Turkish Religious Music. These hymns were adopted in every region of the Ottoman cultural basin in the past and were especially performed until the end of the 19th century, and they were composed with the makam music called Turkish Music today. The Shugul form spread to Anatolia, Istanbul and the Balkans mostly by the Arab origin tariks such as Rifai, Sâ'dî, Bedevi, Dessûkî and who made qiyam dhikr. When viewed at the written sources, the most comprehensive work on the shuguls is the Ebhe'n-nagamat fî terennümati'l-ilahiyyat lyrics journal dated Hijri 1316 (1898) and compiled by Sheikh Mehmed Rıfat Efendi. In this study, examples from the shuguls prerformed by Sheikh Muhammed Bakir al-Keyyali, one of the sheikhs of Aleppo, Bâbu'l-Hadîd Keyyali Zawiya, his brother Sheikh Hasan al-Keyali and the dervishes of the zawiya were discussed.
