Modern conservation theory and basic principles of architectural conservation owe a lot to John Ruskin who was the initiator of the critics against the Style Unity concept and practice in Europe. He spent his life for comprehending poetry, art and architecture with invaluable contributions to the importance of authenticity. He was also the father of the preventive conservation. This line of thought was continued by his followers throughout the European countries and contributed to the genesis of the modern restoration principles in the first half of the twentieth century. Especially the later concepts of filling of ‘lacunae’ and reintegration of the lost parts were widely influenced to accentuate the original and the repaired or reintegrated parts. The concept of authenticity which was focused on in 1990’s was remembered once more, to criticize the restorations of 1964 Venice Charter and onwards. The reminescence of the Ruskin and his ideas has a great role in this re-evaluation of the concept of ‘authenticity’
