Capture of Mosul by ISIL in June 2014 was a shock for everyone and the assault against it at the end of 2016 will herald a new era in Mosul, Iraq and the Middle East. The biggest concern is about the socio-political fault lines of the province given the past examples from other parts of Iraq. After the defeat in Mosul, most probably ISIL will continue to perpetrate terroristic attacks. In order to counter these attacks, security measures and a counter narrative is needed. Most probably we will see a difficult relationship between Arabs and Kurds in terms of political and territorial differences. Beside this, increasing sectarian violence is another concern for many observers. Taking all of these challenges into account, defat of ISIL in Mosul may close a chapter in Iraq’s history, but there will be some other very big challenges to dealt with
