This article examines the coverage of the 2016 military coup attempt and state of emergency in Turkey by some media outlets in a number of Western European countries. It compares this coverage with that of the terrorist attacks and state of emergency in France. It further examines the role of Islamophobia and Orientalism in the coverage of the military coup attempt in Turkey. Finally this article analyzes the framing and narrative on the part of European politicians about the anticoup demonstrations of people of Turkish origin in European countries, and their link to the notion of democracy as a reality in Western democratic culture
