Iran and Saudi Arabia Normalization Agreement: Causes and Consequences

Abstract

In March, Iran and Saudi Arabia reopened diplomatic relations and embassies after a seven-year break and conflict. More recently, negotiations brokered by Iraq and Oman culminated in China taking the role of mediator and guarantor, signaling a major shift in global power dynamics. The two sides agreed to reopen embassies and revive previous cooperation agreements. The high-level meetings consolidated positive progress towards improving relations, with the establishment of joint committees to address various issues. It is expected that there will be repercussions of what happened at the regional level.

التطبيع الإيراني السعودي: الأسباب والنتائج

Abstract

أعادت إيران والسعودية في مارس 2023م العلاقات الدبلوماسية وفتح السفارتين بعد انقطاع وصراع داما سبع سنوات. في الآونة الأخيرة، تُوِّجت المفاوضات بوساطة العراق وسلطنة عمان وأخذ الصين دور الوسيط والضامن، وهذا يشير إلى تحوّل كبير في ديناميكيات القوة العالمية. واتّفق الجانبان على إعادة فتح السفارتين وإحياء اتفاقيات التعاون السابقة. وعززت الاجتماعات رفيعة المستوى التقدّم الإيجابي نحو تحسين العلاقات، مع إنشاء لجان مشتركة لمعالجة مختلف القضايا، ويُتوقَّع أن تكون هناك انعكاسات لما حدث على المستوى الإقليمي.
