The Heroes of the Future: Career Attitudes of Prospective Geriatric Care Technicians

Abstract

Aim: This research was conducted to examine the career future and future attitudes of students studying in the Department of Elderly Care. Material and Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 90 health services vocational high school elderly care department students (mean age; 20.28±1.89 years). A workshop was organized for students about their careers and the future of their profession. The attitudes of the students who participated in this workshop regarding their careers were evaluated with the "Career Future Scale" and their future expectations were evaluated with the "Future Attitude Scale" before and after the workshop. To compare measurement values ​​between two groups, t test was used in dependent groups, and one-way analysis of variance was used to compare measurement values ​​in more than two groups. Results: 71% of the students stated that they knew the definition of the profession. The results of students' knowledge about the profession after training have generally increased. Future Attitude Scale scores of female students increased significantly after the training (p:0.005). When examined by grade, the Future Attitude Scale scores of both 1st grade (p:0.043) and 2nd grade (p:0.017) students increased significantly after the training. When all students' Future Attitude and Career Future Scale scores were examined, there was a significant increase after the training. was observed (p:0.002, p:0.022). Conclusion: The results of this study show that education given to students about their profession and career has a positive effect on their career and future thoughts and attitudes. Organizing training on this subject for students so that they can eliminate their professional concerns, shape their careers better and look to the future more confidently. It may be useful to add themes such as "Career Planning" to course curricula.
