Family-Centered Approaches in Auditory Rehabilitation for Children and Adults with Hearing Loss: A Review of Conceptual Frameworks and Outcomes
Abstract
Hearing loss is a significant public health issue that affects individuals’ communication skills, language development, and social participation. Auditory rehabilitation is a multidimensional process aimed at reducing these effects and improving communicative functioning, and it is currently addressed within a biopsychosocial framework. In this context, not only the individual’s auditory performance but also their interaction with environmental and familial factors constitutes essential components of the rehabilitation process. This review examines the theoretical foundations, clinical applications, and the effects of family-centered approaches in auditory rehabilitation on both individual and family outcomes considering current literature. Evidence from the literature indicates that family involvement plays a critical role, particularly in childhood, by significantly enhancing language development, communication skills, and quality of life. Family-centered early intervention programs have been shown to strengthen parent–child interaction, increase caregiver self-efficacy, and improve developmental outcomes. Moreover, the benefits of family-centered approaches are not limited to children; they also contribute to better adaptation to rehabilitation in adults and help reduce third-party disability experienced by family members. However, several challenges remain in integrating these approaches into clinical practice, including limited family participation, role ambiguity, and sociocultural differences. In conclusion, while family-centered approaches in auditory rehabilitation represent an effective and necessary model, their success depends on the development of individualized, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based intervention strategies. Strengthening family–professional collaboration and promoting structured practices that support family involvement are essential for optimizing rehabilitation outcomes.
