Explore the Opportunities of Transformatıon and Waste in Contemporary Art

Abstract

It is known that ecological art uses art as a tool to seek solutions to ecological problems related
to the world and to raise awareness. It is seen that the importance of upcycling, which is one of
the methods used in this context, should be mentioned. Since upcycling is a sustainable method
that reduces waste generation, it should be brought to the agenda more under the title of ecological
art and ecological sustainability. It is also known that it is frequently preferred by artists as
an artistic production method compatible with contemporary art practices. It will be possible to
say that a branch of land art that emerged in the 1960s, which produces works by problematizing
ecology-related issues, is called ecological art. Many studies are carried out using different
methods within the scope of ecological art. A few exemplary artists have been selected in the
article to better understand upcycling and use it more as an art practice. The works of Kimberly
Garland, Sarah Meyers Brent, Yulia Shtern, and Darice Brown, who are thought to express the
subject best, are examined and the subject of upcycling is discussed through the studies. During
the examination, the artifact analysis method, one of the literature scanning and visual research
methods, was used.

Çağdaş Sanatta İleri Dönüşüm ve Çöpün Olanaklarını Keşfetmek

Abstract

Ekolojik sanatın, dünya ile ilgili ekolojik sorunlara çözüm aramak ve farkındalık yaratmak için sanatı
bir aracı olarak kullandığı bilinmektedir. Bu kapsamda kullanılan yöntemlerden biri olan ileri dönüşümün
önemine değinilmesi gerektiği görülmektedir. İleri dönüşüm atık oluşumunu azaltan sürdürülebilir
bir yöntem olduğundan, ekolojik sanat ve ekolojik sürdürülebilirlik başlığı altında daha
fazla gündeme gelmesi gerekmektedir. Aynı zamanda çağdaş sanat pratikleri ile uyumlu bir sanatsal
üretim yöntemi olarak, sanatçılar tarafından sıklıkla tercih edildiği bilinmektedir. 1960’lı yıllarda
ortaya çıkan arazi sanatının, ekoloji ile ilgili konuları sorunsallaştırarak çalışmalar üreten bir kolunun
ekolojik sanat olarak anıldığını söylemek mümkün olacaktır. Ekolojik sanat kapsamında farklı
yöntemler kullanılarak pek çok çalışma gerçe kleşt irilm ekted ir. Makalede, ileri dönüşümün daha iyi
anlaşılması ve bir sanat pratiği olarak daha fazla kullanılması için birkaç örnek sanatçı seçilmiştir.
Konuyu en iyi ifade ettiği düşünülen sanatçılar olan Kimberly Garland, Sarah Meyers Brent, Yulia
Shtern ve Darice Brown’un çalışmaları incelenerek, çalışmalar üzerinden ileri dönüşüm konusu ele
alınmıştır. İnceleme gerçekleştirilirken, literatür tarama ve görsel araştırma yöntemlerinden eser
analizi yöntemi kullanılmıştır.
