Analyzing Content Knowledge in Physical Activity and Sports Courses: Insights from a Syllabus Review

Abstract

Content knowledge refers to the knowledge teachers need to teach a subject or skill effectively. This is emphasized in both national and international teaching standards, with teacher education syllabi playing a key role in developing such qualifications. This study aimed to examine the physical activity and sports courses in physical education teacher education undergraduate programs in terms of common content knowledge (performance-focused) and specialized content knowledge (teaching-focused). A mixed-methods sequential explanatory design was used. Twenty-one universities, three from each of Türkiye’s seven geographical regions, were selected through random sampling. In the quantitative phase, 168 physical activity and sports course syllabi were coded for content knowledge. In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine faculty members who teach these courses. The interview questions, developed by a panel of experts, were based on insights from the quantitative data. Descriptive analysis of the syllabi showed that 72.95% focused on common content knowledge, while only 7.98% addressed specialized content knowledge. Thematic analysis of interview data revealed three main themes: construction of teaching, knowledge, and skills related to sports, and evaluation of teaching. Further analysis showed that 83.25% of interview responses related to common content knowledge, and 16.25% to specialized content knowledge. In conclusion, physical activity and sports courses in physical education teacher education programs are primarily centered on common content knowledge aimed at sports performance, rather than on developing the teaching-specific skills of pre-service physical education teachers.

Fiziksel Aktivite ve Spor Derslerinde Alan Bilgisinin Analizi: Ders İzlencelerinin İncelenmesi

Abstract

Öğretmenlerin, öğrencilere bir konuyu ya da beceriyi öğretmek için derin alan bilgisine sahip olmaları gerekmektedir. Alan bilgisinin önemi ulusal ve uluslararası öğretmenlik yeterliliklerine yansımaktadır. Öğretmen yetiştirme kurumlarının öğretim programları öğretmen yeterliliklerini kazandırmada önemli bir göstergedir. Bu doğrultuda çalışmamızın amacı, beden eğitimi ve spor öğretmenliği lisans programlarında yürütülen fiziksel aktivite ve spor derslerinin genel alan bilgisi (performans odaklı) ve özelleşmiş alan bilgisi (öğretmenlik odaklı) açısından incelenmesidir. Açıklayıcı sıralı desendeki karma araştırmanın kullanıldığı bu çalışmada yedi coğrafi bölgenin her birinden üç üniversite olmak üzere toplamda 21 üniversite orantısız tabakalama örnekleme ile rastgele belirlenmiştir. Araştırmanın nicel kısmında 21 üniversiteden toplam 168 fiziksel aktivite ve spor dersine ait ders izlenceleri kodlanmıştır. Nitel kısmında ise bu dersleri yürüten toplam dokuz öğretim elemanı ile yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yedi sorudan oluşan görüşme formu nicel verilerin incelenmesi sonrası alan bilgisi konusunda uzmanların katılımıyla gerçekleştirilen bir panel sonucunda geliştirilmiştir. Nicel veriler betimleyici analizle incelenmiştir. Fiziksel aktivite ve spor derslerinin ders izlencelerinin kodlanmasından elde edilen veriler, derslerin %72,95 genel alan bilgisi ve %7,98 özelleşmiş alan bilgisi odaklı olarak işlendiğini ortaya koymaktadır. Öğretim elemanları ile yapılan görüşmelerden elde edilen nitel verilerin tümevarımsal tematik analizi sonucunda üç ana tema ortaya çıkmıştır: öğretimi yapılandırma, sporlarla ilgili bilgi ve becerilere sahip olma ve öğretimi değerlendirme. Ayrıca alt temalar incelendiğinde verilerin %83,25’lik bölümünün genel alan bilgisine, %16,25’lik bölümünün ise özelleşmiş alan bilgisine yönelik olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Sonuç olarak beden eğitimi ve spor öğretmenliği lisans programlarında okutulan fiziksel aktivite ve spor derslerinin öğretmen adaylarının öğretmenlik becerisini geliştirmekten ziyade sporlardaki performanslarını yükseltmeyi amaçlayan genel alan bilgisi odaklı olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
