The Inequality-Energy Nexus: The Distribution of Energy Poverty and Renewable Transitions

Abstract

This study looks at energy poverty from social, economic, environmental and infrastructure perspectives. Energy poverty is shown to stem from economic inequality due to income differences affecting the availability, affordability and reliability of energy sources in developing countries. In addition, this has led to negative impacts on the environment and human health. This study uses regression analysis to understand energy poverty and income inequality. The regression is done using the Panel-Corrected Standard Errors (PCSE) and Feasible Generalised Least Squares (FGLS) techniques. The results show that increasing public investment and renewable energy consumption will reduce energy poverty. However, urbanisation and income inequality will increase energy poverty. Innovative and inclusive approaches are recommended to ensure that sustainable energy is available for all to boost long-term socio-economic growth globally.
