THE PERCEPTIONS AND MINDFULNESS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS REGARDING URBAN GREEN AREAS IN TURKEY: THE SAMPLE OF

Urban green areas are the parks and small-scale green spaces situated in cities, and there are those who consider the rooftop gardens and their house yards as urban green spaces. The urban green areas make an unprecedented contribution to the sustainable urban life, and it is seen that the basic strategies regarding this generally come under the aspects of producing (procuring) more parks and gardens and preserving the natural heritage as well as handing it down to the next generations. Along with the fact that the sustainable development has become one of the international focal points, the interest in the role that the green areas play in the urban environment seems to have increased in recent years. Besides, breaking out in May 2013, Taksim Gezi Park events, which remained on the agenda of both the Turkish and some of the foreign Media for quite a long time, also brought up the importance of the phenomenon of urban green areas to the public agenda once more. It is quite important to provide the youth with education on the significance of green areas in terms of the future of our cities. Working on the awareness level of the youth about urban green areas is of considerable importance for this reason. Kentsel yeşil alanlar, kentlerde bulunan parklar ve kent içinde yer alan küçük ölçekli yeşil alanlar olup, bina çatıları ile ev bahçeleri de kentsel yeşil alan olarak kabul edilebilmektedir. Kentsel yeşil alanlar sürdürülebilir kentsel yaşama eşsiz katkılar sağlamakta olup buna ilişkin ana stratejilerin genellikle daha fazla park ve bahçe üretilmesi ile doğal mirasın korunup gelecek nesillere aktarılması noktalarında toplandığı görülmektedir. Sürdürülebilir gelişmenin uluslararası odak noktalarından biri haline gelmesi ile birlikte kentsel çevrede yer alan yeşil alanların üstlendikleri role duyulan ilginin son yıllarda arttığı gözlemlenmektedir. Bunun yanı sıra 2013 Mayıs’ında başlayıp Türkiye ve bir kısım dünya medyasının gündeminde uzunca zaman yer alan Gezi Parkı olayları da kentsel yeşil alan olgusunun önemini bir kez daha kamuoyunun gündemine taşımıştır. Gençlere yeşil alanların önemi üzerine eğitim vermek kentlerimizin geleceği açısından çok önemlidir. Öğrencilerin kentsel yeşil alanlara dair farkındalık düzeylerinin çalışılması bu yüzden oldukça önem taşımaktadır. Bu çalışmada öğrencilerin kentsel yeşil alanlar üzerine mevcut algı ve bilgileri birlikte ele alınacaktır
