THE PERCEPTIONS AND MINDFULNESS OF COLLEGE STUDENTS REGARDING URBAN GREEN AREAS IN TURKEY: THE SAMPLE OF

Abstract

Urban green areas are the parks and small-scale green spaces situated in cities, and there are those who consider the rooftop gardens and their house yards as urban green spaces. The urban green areas make an unprecedented contribution to the sustainable urban life, and it is seen that the basic strategies regarding this generally come under the aspects of producing (procuring) more parks and gardens and preserving the natural heritage as well as handing it down to the next generations. Along with the fact that the sustainable development has become one of the international focal points, the interest in the role that the green areas play in the urban environment seems to have increased in recent years. Besides, breaking out in May 2013, Taksim Gezi Park events, which remained on the agenda of both the Turkish and some of the foreign Media for quite a long time, also brought up the importance of the phenomenon of urban green areas to the public agenda once more. It is quite important to provide the youth with education on the significance of green areas in terms of the future of our cities. Working on the awareness level of the youth about urban green areas is of considerable importance for this reason. In this study, the current perceptions and knowledge of the students over urban green areas will be discussed in tandem (together)
