REVERSE MIGRATION AND APPLICATIONS OF REVERSE MIGRATION INCENTIVES: THE CASE OF

Abstract

Migration flows from rural areas to urban areas until 2000s caused economic and social problems in urban areas. Both the increase of negative factors in the urban areas and the transformation of rural areas into new attraction spaces have made reverse migration an important subject. This study aims to examine the reverse migration issue in Turkey in the case of Istanbul province within the scope of push and pull theory. The results of the study reveal that unemployment and higher standards of living are the main push factors of urban areas whereas structural improvements and policies to boost employment opportunities are the main pull factors of rural areas. Moreover the study also puts forward that Istanbul is a good case about the applications of reverse migration incentives.
