Geographical Elements in Fakir Baykurt's Novel Kaplumbağalar (The Turtles)
Abstract
This study has analyzed Fakir Baykurt's novel Kaplumbağalar through the perspective of literary geography. It aims to demonstrate the functionality of literary texts as a data source in the analysis and digital visualization of geographical data. The 'geographical-centered reading' method was adopted in the research. Based on the texts in the novel, qualitative data were transformed into spatial and character-oriented databases. The obtained data were digitally visualized via the 'romanatlasi.com' website, which was developed with an interdisciplinary approach; they were examined through spatial and character-oriented analyses. The analysis results show that the socio-cultural fabric and daily life of Tozak Village in the novel are directly shaped by the harsh and arid continental climate conditions and seasonal cycles of Central Anatolia. In particular, it was determined that drought, water scarcity, and unproductive lands are the most critical environmental elements determining the social structure. As a result of all these findings, the research shows that literature is not independent of geographical reality.
