Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Acupuncture Treatment in Patients with Parkinson’s Disease

Abstract

Objectives: Acupuncture is the most widely used complementary therapy management for the treatment of Parkinson's Disease (PD). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment in early-stage Parkinson's patients. Method: 29 Parkinson's patients were randomized into two groups as acupuncture (n=17) and control groups (n=12). The primary outcome measure of the study was the change from baseline to the 5th week in the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) scores. Secondary outcome measures are the change in Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) scores, which are used to evaluate sleep propensity and quality of life, at 5 weeks. Results: Improvement was found in the UPDRS, ESS, and SF-36 physical function and pain dimension scores after treatment in the acupuncture group (p<0.05). It was determined that the change in the UPDRS-total and UPDRSI-III scores before and after the treatment in the acupuncture group was statistically significantly higher than the control group (effect size 0.76; 0.57; 0.91; 0.94 respectively, p<0.001). Conclusion: Our study provides evidence that combined acupuncture treatment with pharmacological treatment can be used as a more effective treatment approach in improving symptoms and quality of life than pharmacological treatment alone.
