Abstract

Bu çalışmada, toplumsal meseleleri duyarlı bir araştırmacının gerek teorik gerekse ampirik çalışmalarda sorunsala ilişkin bilgileri yalnızca sonuç odaklı değil; aynı zamanda teoriyi ve yöntemi, yaşamdaki kılcal damarlardan sızdırarak bütüne yaymanın nasıl iş göreceği tartışılacaktır. Bu bağlamda, teori ve yaşam ikiliği bir pratik olarak ele alınacak; araştırmacının teoriyle kurduğu ilişki ile teorinin yaşamsal olanla nasıl bağlantı kurduğu Amerikalı sosyolog Howard S. Becker’ın “Mesleğin İncelikleri: Sosyal Bilimlerde Araştırma Nasıl Yürütülür?” isimli çalışması incelenerek tartışılacaktır. Bu inceleme çalışması, teori ve yöntemin yaşamsal olanla nasıl ilişkilendiğini ve temas ettiğini irdeleyerek araştırmacının, araştırma süreci boyunca bulunduğu konuma dair ipuçları sunmayı hedeflemiştir.

Book Review: The Place of Theory and Method in Social Sciences in Social Life: Examining it from the Perspective of Howard S. Becker

Abstract

In this study, it will be discussed how a socially sensitive researcher, in both theoretical and empirical work, approaches the problem not merely with a results-oriented perspective, but also by diffusing theory and method into the fabric of life, as if seeping through its capillaries. In this context, the duality of theory and life will be treated as a practical matter; the researcher’s relationship with theory and the ways in which theory establishes connections with the lived world will be examined through the work of American sociologist Howard S. Becker, Tricks of the Trade: How to Think About Your Research While You’re Doing It. This inquiry aims to explore how theory and method engage with and relate to the lived, thereby offering insights into the researcher’s positionality throughout the research process.
