“Other Body”: Disabled Body and Disability as a Form of Otherness

Abstract

Disability has been present in all societies in the world throughout history. In spite of the long history and universality of disability, people with disabilities have been discriminated almost without exception. Physical differences have determined social structures by defining certain bodies as the norm, and defining those which fall outside the norm as 'Other'. The degree of 'Otherness' is defined by the degree of variation from the norm. Normality and otherness as well as who is normal or other have been defined in different ways according to the time and culture in which the question was asked. Universality replaced locality, reason replaced mystery, knowledge and state of the mind superseded the lived experience of the body. 'Normality', then became determined by the ideal of the white, youthful, able, male body; and otherness became hierarchically placed as marginality
