The Epistemological Background of Anthony Giddens’ Sociological Theory

Abstract

Anthony Giddens, who is the one of today’s major sociologists, has attempted to put forward a new theory to understand modern societies and their development, and aimed to reconstruct the sociological perspective with this effort. This study aims to examine the ideas behind Giddens’ reconciliatory ‘theory of structuration’, in other words, the intellectual heritage that he depends on. Therefore, this study firstly deals with Giddens’ intellectual relationship with structuralism and functionalism, which were continuation of positivism and set the course of sociology for a long time. After that, hermeneutics, which was put forward as a challenge to positivist, functionalist and structuralist trends, will be dealt in terms of its effects on Giddens’ work, focusing on A. Schutz, P. Winch and H. Garfinkel. The study will conclude with evaluations of the possibilities that theory of structuration, which Giddens blended with significant concepts of these two traditions, offers to contemporary sociology

ANTHONY GİDDENS’IN SOSYOLOJİK TEORİSİNİN EPİSTEMOLOJİK ARKA PLANI

Abstract

Günümüzün önemli sosyologlarından olan Anthony Giddens, modern toplumları ve onların gelişimini anlamaya yarayacak yeni bir teori ortaya koymaya çalışmış ve bu çabasıyla sosyolojik bakış açısını yeniden inşa etmeyi amaçlamıştır. Bu çalışma, Giddens’ın uzlaşımcı bir tavırla oluşturduğu ‘yapılaşma teorisi’nin arka planında yatan fikirleri, yani onun dayandığı entelektüel mirasları ele alma çabasındadır. Bu nedenle çalışmada öncelikli olarak Giddens’ın, sosyolojinin uzun süre yönünü tayin eden ve pozitivizmin devamı niteliğinde olan yapısalcılık ve işlevselcilik akımlarıyla entelektüel ilişkisi ele alınacaktır. Ardından pozitivist, işlevselci ve yapısalcı eğilimlere bir meydan okuma olarak ortaya konan hermeneutiğin Giddens’ın çalışmaları üzerindeki etkisi A. Schutz, P. Winch ve H. Garfinkel özelinde ele alınacaktır. Çalışma, Giddens’ın bu iki geleneğin önemli kavramlarıyla harmanlayarak oluşturduğu yapılaşma teorisinin günümüz sosyolojik iklimi için ne gibi imkânlar sunduğuna ilişkin tespitlerle sona erecektir
