Demographic Transition in Turkey

Abstract

By aiming at explaining the demographic transition which Turkey experienced from the early republican period to the present from a multidimensional way, this article firstly handles the dynamics which causes a transition from high birth and death rates to lower birth and death rates, and secondly demonstrates its reflections upon society. Notably by providing the elements of material culture and the increasing educational status of women who are at fertile cohorts, Turkey has progressed far in the socio-economic development according to objective measures of well-being, in a relatively short period of time. Death rates at all ages declined, life expectancy increased, fertility begun to level off at low rates, household size shrank and rural population is replaced by that of urban. Again at this stage, population of Turkey was rapidly increased. In this study, demographic transition of Turkey is discussed in two different periods, namely 1923-1963 and 1964-2014 which are classified according to the economic paradigms followed by the ruling governments of the time. Among all other demographic dynamics particularly when the changes in fertility behaviour is taken into consideration, it is observed that total fertility rate approximated the replacement level, a situation which is experienced at advanced stages of demographic transition. However since 2000’s, through a perception change which is constructed by pronatalist political discourse, it is now expected that low level fertility would possibly return to medium level fertility. It is also considered that this perception change, which is especially influential among certain segments of country, would increase fertility and therefore causes a delay in demographic transition of Turkey where socioeconomic development does not cover the whole society
