Ideology, Politics and Victimization in the Representation of Arab Identity by Islamist Journalists in Turkey

Year 2016, Issue: 1ozel, 51 - 64, 01.03.2016

Abstract

This study explores how Turkish Islamist journalists construct the Arab image in their journalistic practices. Traditional norms and practices of journalism are undermined by the social polarisation along political, cultural and ideological lines. In this social process, Islamist journalists identify Arabs as ‘one-of-us’ by subverting the status of ‘otherness’ attributed to the Arabs over the past years, when interpreting the news stories from the Middle East. The three-month ethnographic fieldwork at the newsroom of an Islamic mainstream television channel has yielded two results: a) Islamism codifies Arabs with the stereotype ‘Muslim brother’ in journalistic interpretations and practices, and b) developing the desire for solidarity with Arabs and common struggle, journalists assign a particular political role to the Arabs to play in the realisation of the ‘ideal society’ based on their Islamist utopia. This ideal society is an Islamic nation (ümmet) in which Turks and Arabs are supposed to live together, and the struggle is common, because Muslim Arabs are presumed to be the current victim of the same secular army and bureaucratic elites, from which Turkish pious Muslims supposedly suffered in the 1990s

TÜRKİYE'DE İSLAMCI GAZETECİLERİN ARAP KİMLİĞİNİ TEMSİL PRATİKLERİNDE İDEOLOJİ, SİYASET VE KURBANLAŞTIRMA EDİMİ

Year 2016, Issue: 1ozel, 51 - 64, 01.03.2016
