Abstract

Adaptation of the Emotional Style Scale to Turkish: A Validity and Reliability Study

Year 2023, , 263 - 277, 24.05.2023
https://doi.org/10.17753/sosekev.1225095

Abstract

Emotions are central and important to the human experience. Healthy emotional lives are a prerequisite for both individual and social development. The aim of this study is to examine the validity and reliability of the Emotional Style Scale developed by Kesebir et al. for Turkish culture. The construct validity of the Emotional Style Scale was examined first with Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and then with Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The reliability of the scale was determined by the Cronbach α internal consistency reliability coefficient. The Exploratory Factor Analysis study group consisted of 315 university students, 168 females (53.3%) and 147 males (46.7%), and the Confirmatory Factor Analysis study group consisted of a total of 298 university students, 160 females (53.7%) and 138 males (46.3%). When the EFA results were examined, it was seen that the Emotional Style Scale consisted of 18 items and 5 sub-dimensions. As a result of CFA, it was determined that the model fit indices of the five-factor structure of the scale were at a good level. According to the reliability analysis values, the Cronbach α internal consistency reliability coefficient of the scale was calculated as .79 for the entire scale. In the reliability analysis of the scale, it was determined that the Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficient and test-retest correlation values were at an acceptable level. As a result of the findings obtained from the research, it was determined that the Emotional Style Scale could be used as a valid and reliable measurement tool in examining the emotional dimensions of individuals. According to the research findings, suggestions were made for both application and research areas.
