INVESTIGATION OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PARENTS' ONLINE PRIVACY CONCERNS AND SOCIAL MEDIA BEHAVIORS

Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between parents' privacy concerns levels and their social media behaviours. This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with the parents (n=8,305) of students attending public primary, secondary and high schools in 81 provinces in Türkiye. Parents were selected by quota sampling method. The data were collected with the parent data collection form, Social Media Behaviour Scale (SMBS) and Online Privacy Anxiety Level Scale (OPALS). In the analysis of the data, t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson Correlation test and multiple regression test were used. The significance level was accepted as p<0.05. Parents are moderately concerned about online privacy and this concern is higher among parents who live in the city and have higher education levels. Parents whose children attend kindergarten, primary school and secondary school have higher online privacy concerns. Parents living in the city centre have more positive social media behaviours than those living in rural areas. As the level of education and social media experience increases, social media behaviour increases positively. There is a low-level positive relationship between parents' online privacy concerns and social media behaviours. Demographic factors were found to be effective on parents' online privacy concerns and social media use behaviours. Customising education and awareness-raising activities for parents by taking into account factors such as age, education level and place of residence will contribute to obtaining more effective results.

EBEVEYNLERİN ÇEVRİMİÇİ MAHREMİYET KAYGILARI İLE SOSYAL MEDYA DAVRANIŞLARI ARASINDAKİ İLİŞKİNİN İNCELENMESİ

Öz

Bu çalışma, ebeveynlerin çevrimiçi gizlilik kaygı düzeyleri ile sosyal medya davranışları arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Tanımlayıcı tipte kesitsel olarak yürütülen bu araştırma Türkiye’de 81 ilde resmi ilkokul, ortaokul ve liselerde eğitim gören öğrencilerin ebeveynleri (n=8,305) ile yapılmıştır. Ebeveynler, kotalı örnekleme yöntemiyle seçilmiştir. Veriler ebeveyn veri toplama formu, Sosyal Medya Davranış Ölçeği (SMDÖ) ve Çevrimiçi Mahremiyet Kaygı Düzeyi Ölçeği (ÇMKDÖ) ile toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde t testi, tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA), Pearson Korelasyon testi ve çoklu regresyon testi kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada anlamlılık düzeyi p<0.05 olarak kabul edilmiştir. Ebeveynler çevrimiçi gizlilik konusunda orta düzeyde endişelidir ve bu endişe şehirde yaşayan ve daha yüksek eğitim seviyesine sahip ebeveynler arasında daha yüksektir. Çocukları anaokuluna, ilkokula ve ortaokula giden ebeveynlerin çevrimiçi gizlilik endişeleri daha yüksektir. Şehir merkezinde yaşayan ebeveynlerin kırsal kesimde yaşayanlara göre daha olumlu sosyal medya davranışları vardır. Eğitim seviyesi ve sosyal medya deneyimi arttıkça sosyal medya davranışı olumlu şekilde artmaktadır. Ebeveynlerin çevrimiçi mahremiyet endişeleri ile sosyal medya davranışları arasında düşük düzeyde olumlu bir ilişki vardır. Ebeveynlerin çevrimiçi mahremiyet kaygıları ve sosyal medya kullanma davranışları üzerinde demografik faktörlerin etkili olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ebeveynlere yönelik eğitim ve bilinçlendirme çalışmalarının, yaş, eğitim düzeyi ve yaşadıkları yer gibi faktörler göz önünde bulundurularak özelleştirilmesi, daha etkili sonuçlar elde edilmesine katkı sağlayacaktır.
