ACCESSIBILITY STRATEGIES OF PEOPLE WITH PHYSICAL DISABILITY FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
Abstract
With the first industrial revolution that started in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe, production increased, migration from villages to cities started and the growth of cities accelerated. In these days when we are experiencing the 4th industrial revolution that first emerged in Germany in 2011, which has been integrated robot technologies into our lives, the growth of cities has reached an enormous speed. Undoubtedly, the rapid growth of cities has caused problems such as not being able to provide urban planning and technical infrastructure building services (planned construction, education, health and transportation services, etc.) at the same pace, or being inadequate even if they are provided. With the increase in migration from villages to cities during this rapid urbanization process, the working population has concentrated in cities and the demand for transportation infrastructure has increased due to the need for urban mobility. Today, municipalities meet this urban public transport services demand in cities. People with disabilities from disadvantaged groups, on the other hand, need additional services or equipment in order to benefit from these public transportation services. In this study, the purpose of which is to suggest strategies to improve the efficiency of public transportation services for individuals with physical disabilities, transportation designs and government policies designed for people with disabilities in various countries of the world has been examined. As a result of the study, it was determined that the accessibility strategies for transportation applied around the world are insufficient to meet the needs of people with disabilities. When it comes to improve the improvement of transportation needs of people with disabilities, it is known that Turkey Republic has a lot of successful projects, and it is also thought that setting targets for these strategies that developed in line with new technologies, can make the country a model country for disabled transportation services. The study completed with conclusions in regard with the strategies and recommendations for future researchers.
