National Football Teams and Youth Sports Career: Management Strategies in Talent Selection

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the output of talent selection and management processes by examining the career status of the players invited to the Turkish Men's U17 National Team in the period 2013-2018 in the 2023-2024 season, in comparison with the Portuguese U17 example. A retrospective and correlational survey model was used with a quantitative research approach; data was compiled from TFF.org and Transfermarkt sources. In the analysis, the league level of the players in 2023-2024 and their promotion to the National Team were analyzed with descriptive statistics. In Turkey, only 9.42% of the 276 players invited to U17 between 2013-2018 were in the Super League, while 6.15% were promoted to the A National Team. 38.4% of the players are in the amateur league, have left football or are without a club. In the same period, 54.34% of the 184 invited players in Portugal played in the top league or abroad, while 11.95% reached the National A level. The findings suggest that the conversion rate of U17 invitations into top-level performance remains limited in Turkey, and that there is room for improvement in talent management, transition and sustainable support mechanisms compared to Portugal. As a result, a scientific, systematic and holistic talent management, club-federation coordination, individual development-mentoring and strategic support for international transitions can improve the success rate in Turkey.

Futbol Milli Takımları ve Gençlerin Spor Kariyeri: Yetenek Seçiminde Yönetim Stratejileri

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Türkiye Erkek U17 Futbol Milli Takımı’na 2013–2018 döneminde davet alan futbolcuların 2023–2024 sezonundaki kariyer durumlarını inceleyerek yetenek seçimi ve yönetim süreçlerinin çıktısını, Portekiz U17 örneğiyle karşılaştırmalı olarak değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Nicel araştırma yaklaşımıyla retrospektif ve ilişkisel tarama modeli kullanılmış; veriler TFF.org ve Transfermarkt kaynaklarından derlenmiştir. Analizde oyuncuların 2023–2024’te bulundukları lig düzeyi ve A Milli Takım’a yükselme durumları betimsel istatistiklerle incelenmiştir. Türkiye’de 2013–2018 arasında U17’ye davet edilen 276 oyuncunun yalnızca %9,42’si Süper Lig’de yer almış; %6,15’i A Milli Takım’a yükselebilmiştir. Oyuncuların %38,4’ü amatör ligde, futboldan ayrılmış veya kulüpsüz durumdadır. Aynı dönemde Portekiz’de davet edilen 184 oyuncunun %54,34’ü en üst ligde veya yurtdışında oynamakta, %11,95’i A Milli seviyeye ulaşmaktadır. Bulgular, Türkiye’de U17 düzeyindeki davetlerin üst düzey performansa dönüşüm oranının sınırlı kaldığını; Portekiz’e kıyasla yetenek yönetimi, geçiş ve sürdürülebilir destek mekanizmalarında geliştirmeye açık alanlar bulunduğunu göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak bilimsel, sistematik ve bütüncül bir yetenek yönetimi; kulüp-federasyon eşgüdümü, bireysel gelişim-mentorluk ve uluslararası geçişlerin stratejik desteklenmesiyle Türkiye’de olan başarı yüzdesi yükselebilecektir.
