Abstract

MERSİN 34TH STREET EXCAVATION ROMAN AND LATE ANTIQUE PERIOD COMMERCIAL AMPHORAE

Year 2024, Issue: 6, 220 - 251, 30.12.2024
https://doi.org/10.55061/srmka.1567986

Abstract

Important findings were unearthed in the excavations carried out by the Mersin Museum on 34th Street within the borders of the Yenişehir district of Mersin province in 2018. The Roman Imperial and Late Antique Period amphoras found among these findings are the subject of this article. The forms evaluated include Pompeii V, Zemer 41, LRA 1, LRA 2 and LRA 4 amphoras. The Pompeii V amphoras, produced in Cilicia, are the earliest dated group. The LRA 1B group, dated to the 6th-7th centuries AD, constitutes the mostdense group among the amphoras recovered from the settlement. The numerical density of the Late Antique Period amphoras and the presence of funnel and amphora stands suggest that the archaeological site in question was active as a rural settlement. In addition, the restitution study conducted using the mouth, bottom and amphora stand of LRA 1B amphoras shows that the funnels belong to the LRA 1 group. Among the findings, there are one example of Aegean-made LRA 2 and Syria-Palestine-made LRA 4 amphoras, supporting the previously documented trade relations of the Cilicia Region with the Aegean and Syria-Palestine regions. Statistical studies conducted on amphora forms show that the 34th Street settlement was used intensively in the 6th-7th centuries AD.
