Abstract

Amphorae are ceramic vessels widely used for the transportation of liquids and solids throughout Antiquity. With the expansion of trade in the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods, amphora production underwent morphological changes in parallel with technological advances and commercial needs. This study aims to examine the morphological transformations in the production of amphorae, the backbone of trade in Antiquity, and the sustainability practices in these processes. In this context, the technical innovations of the period, the use of resources and the understanding of sustainability in production processes will be examined. From the Archaic Period to the Roman Period, the morphology of amphorae underwent significant changes in terms of both aesthetics and functionality. At the same time, sustainability practices were supported by elements such as the use of local raw materials, recycling and energy efficiency. Ancient societies tried to balance the environmental impacts of trade and production and used their resources efficiently. With the expansion of trade during the Roman Empire, both formal and functional differences emerged in amphora production. In many settlements, it is known that imitations of region-specific amphora types were produced and marketed. It is also observed that some producing regions produced new forms with different morphology in order to increase the commercial potential of their products. In this article, the morphological transformation and sustainability practices in amphora production during the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods are discussed in more detail and in depth. Characteristic amphora types, changes in production techniques and sustainability of raw materials are analyzed in relation to the economic-social conditions of the period.

ANTİK DÖNEM’DE TİCARİ AMPHORA ÜRETİMİNDE MORFOLOJİK DÖNÜŞÜM VE SÜRDÜRÜLEBİLİRLİK
