EVALUATION OF NUTRITION HABITS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS STAYING IN STATE DORMITORIES IN TERMS OF FOOD ADVERTISEMENTS
Abstract
Aim: This study was conducted to examine the dietary habits of university students and to evaluate the impact of food advertisements on healthy eating.
Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted in September 2020 with an online questionnaire to students enrolled in 24 student dormitories of different capacities affiliated to the Konya Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Data were collected with a sociodemographic information form that examined the demographic characteristics, dietary habits and media use information of the participants. Chi-square test was used in the statistical evaluation of the data.
Results: While female students consume two main meals a day, males consume three main meals (p<0.001). Female and male students skip lunch (p=0.007). While female students eat less according to their psychological state, male eating habits do not change (p<0.001). While female students eat out once a month, males eat out two or three times a week (p<0.001). Female and male students sometimes read healthy nutrition articles (p<0.001). Female and male students do not follow healthy nutrition articles (p<0.001). It was determined that the most striking issue in the media about nutrition for females and males was healthy nutrition (p=0.047). Female and male students value the reliability of nutrition articles in the media as written by a nutritionist (p=0.002).
Conclusion: Three-quarters of the students change their eating habits by being affected by articles about healthy nutrition in the media. Providing students with education about healthy nutrition or having this issue covered in the media may lead to a change in their eating habits.
