Abstract
Tasawwuf's process of becoming a science and systematically revealing its terms differ from other sciences in some points. One of the most important of these is the discourses of the sūfīs who used the concepts in the formation process of the terms and their practical lives around these discourses. In this sense, it can be said that the information mentioned in the works of sūfī biographies makes it possible to deal with sūfīsm both practically and theoretically. Especially, the understanding of the words and actions of the early sūfīs is of great importance in terms of evaluating tasawwuf’s process of becoming a discipline. ‘Amr Ibn ‘Uthman al-Makki, who lived at the same time as al-Junayd al-Baghdadi, is also a significant sūfī who lived in the early period in this respect. As a sūfī, he can provide valuable data in terms of both the connection of al-Makki with other Islamic disciplines and the reflection of the sūfī thought of the region in which he lived. Hereby the priority in this article is to examine the information given about al-Makki in the sūfī biography works. As a result of this examination, his life, personality, his understanding of sufism will be tried to be determined conceptually and his impressions of his place in the history of sufism will be given. In addition, it is thought that the study can give an idea about how a sūfī is handled in the sūfī biographies.
