THE CAUSALITY ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EXTERNAL BORROWING AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN TURKEY

Abstract

In this study, the literature of external borrowing-economic growth that the studies are compiled on Turkish economy with discussed the external debt statistics of Turkey in recent years is examined and it’s analyzed as empirical that the relationship between external borrowing economic growth in Turkey. Differently from the literature in this fieldwork at first, cointegration tests were made by using several control variable, linear, non-linear and asymmetrical causality tests were used to view the causality. The results reveal that the external borrowing affects negatively the economic growth in Turkish Economy. The Linear, non-linear causality tests with one statistics show that there isn’t causality between external borrowing and economic growth but the asymmetrical causality tests show that the negative external debt shock is the reason of the negative economic growth in cases where the direction of causality is just from external debt to economic growth.

TÜRKİYE’DE DIŞ BORÇLANMA VE EKONOMİK BÜYÜME İLİŞKİSİNİN NEDENSELLİK ANALİZLERİ

Abstract

Bu çalışmada Türkiye’nin son yıllardaki dış borç istatistikleri tartışılarak Türkiye ekonomisi üzerine yapılan çalışmaların derlendiği dış borç ekonomik büyüme literatürü incelenmekte ve Türkiye’de dış borçlanma ve ekonomik büyüme ilişkisi ampirik olarak analiz edilmektedir. Literatürden farklı olarak bu çalışmada öncelikle değişik kontrol değişkenleri kullanılarak eşbütünleşme testleri yapılmış, nedenselliği incelemek için de doğrusal, doğrusal olmayan ve asimetrik nedensellik testleri kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, Türkiye Ekonomisinde dış borçlanmanın ekonomik büyümeyi negatif etkilediğini ortaya koymaktadır. Tek istatistikli doğrusal ve doğrusal olmayan nedensellik testleri dış borçlanma ile ekonomik büyüme arasında bir nedenselliğin olmadığını gösterirken, asimetrik nedensellik testleri, nedenselliğin yönünün sadece dış borçlardan ekonomik büyümeye doğru olduğu durumda, negatif dış borç şoklarının negatif ekonomik büyümenin nedeni olduğu şeklindedir.
