Abstract
As, nowadays, social, political and economical developments have been experienced
continuously, the concept of manager and management have become very important issue
in the management literature. Indeed, most of the time, the idea of manager and
management have been accepted as the reason for the social development or social
degeneration. Therefore, in order to create healthy and unproblematic development and
change, the concept of manager and management need to be re-assessed, and the most
suitable managerial style must be determined. In the first part of this paper, the term of management is defined, and management
styles and the importance of management are evaluated. In the second part, the results of
the survey, carried out on 200 managers lived in the city of Kahramanmaraş and its nine
counties, are examined. The survey was conducted to find out the managers’ idea on the
concepts of manager and management. It was designed to find answers, especially, for the
following research questions: How do managers define the term of manager? Do the
managerial skills come from the birth or gained by learning? Which kind of managerial
functions do managers have? What are the aspects make managers successful and
powerful? What are the factors that affect managerial behaviour? How managers think on
the idea of participative management? What kind of effects do managers have on their
subordinates? Which managerial problems do they have? In the last section of the paper, a
set of recommendations are made in the light of the survey results
