Determining Rangeland Areas by Satellite Images

Abstract

The objective of this study is to determine the amount and distribution of rangeland areas by satellite images. Rangelands, gene sources of flora and fauna, are important feed source for livestock and plays important roles for erosion control. This study covers 48 provinces where “National Rangeland use and management project” was carried out. Manual digitizing method was used to digitize rangeland polygons over satellite images. In addition to ancillary data such as Turkish soil database and CORINE land use data, satellite images of varying resolution were used in the study. According to study results, total rangeland area was about 16.3 million ha in the whole project area
