The Effect of Salt Stress on Seedling Growth of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Abstract

Salinity problem which is seen most common nowadays, affects 7% of total terrestrial area in the world. It has been reported that 30% of agricultural areas will be affected from salinity in forthcoming quarter century. In this study, the effects of different salt (NaCl) concentrations (0-control, 50, 150 and 250 mM) on morphological and physiological characters in seedling growth stage of sunflower were examined. Plant height, plant fresh and dry weights, secondary and tertiary leaf areas as morphological characters; chlorophyll contents, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione reductase (GR), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) activities as physiological characters were determined. Increasing salt concentrations caused to decrease in plant height, root length and leaf area. The highest values regarding chlorophyll contents were obtained from 250 mM salt concentration. All physiological characters decreased in increasing salt concentrations except catalase (CAT) activity
