Geographical Indications at International Level, The Created Economic Value and Evaluation of the System in Turkey
Abstract
In this study, the geographical indications that are extremely important for the purposes such as preserving
traditional cultures, promoting local and rural development, protecting small producers and improving product
quality are examined. Firstly, the geographical indication system used in an international context and the
economic value created by this system are analyzed. Then, the developments in geographical indications and the
economic value created in Turkey are discussed during the period from Decree-Law No. 555 on the Protection of
Geographical Indications published in 1995 to Law No. 6769 on Industrial Property which was published in the
Official Gazette dated January 10, 2017. Lastly, suggestions are made on how to increase the number of
geographically labeled products in the upcoming period. It is thought that it will become more widespread in our
country after understanding the benefits of geographical indications and their effects on development.
