Abstract

Mahmud Erol Kılıç's Sufi and Poetry is a brief commentary on a poem by the nineteenth-century Ottoman Sufi poet Ahmed Kuddusi (d. 1265/1849). The author states that the most important element that nourishes poetry in the Islamic tradition is Sufism. Without understanding Sufism, which is one of the metaphysical systems of thought, it is impossible to understand the Ottoman poet's world of mind and poetry. The main purpose of this book is to reveal the worldview of the Ottoman poet and the Sufi perspective that dominated his poetry. The book is an exclusive study that looks at the phenomenon of “poetry” from the perspective of Sufism, rather than a work that covers the entire history of Sufi poetry. In the book, answers to the questions “What is poetry?” and “What is the place of poetry in existence?” are sought. By looking at the history of the word poetry within the Islamic religion, the semantic history of the word is discussed. The inclusive position of Sufism in determining the worldview of the Ottoman poet is emphasized. Muhyiddin Ibn al-Arabi, Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi and Yunus Emre's opinions on poetry and their important influences on Sufi poets are given. An attempt has been made to clarify the issue of who understands Sufi poetry and who does not.

Abstract

Mahmud Erol Kılıç’ın Sûfî ve Şiir adlı eseri, XIX. yüzyıl Osmanlı mutasavvıf şairlerinden Ahmed Kuddûsî’nin (ö. 1265/1849) bir şiiri üzerine yapılmış muhtasar bir şerhtir. Yazar, İslam geleneğinde şiiri besleyen en önemli unsurun tasavvuf olduğunu ifade etmiştir. Metafizik düşünce sistemlerinden biri olan tasavvufu anlamadan Osmanlı şairinin zihin dünyasını ve şiirini anlamak mümkün değildir. Bu kitabın temel amacı da Osmanlı şairinin dünya görüşünü ve şiirine hâkim olan tasavvufî bakış açısını ortaya koymaktır. Kitap bütün sûfî şiir tarihini kapsayan bir çalışma olmaktan ziyade “şiir” olgusuna tasavvuf perspektifinden bakan münhasır bir çalışmadır. Kitapta “Şiir nedir?”, Şiirin varlıktaki yeri neresidir?” sorularına cevap aranmıştır. Şiir kelimesinin İslam dini içerisindeki tarihine bakılarak kelimenin semantik tarihi ele alınmıştır. Tasavvufun, Osmanlı şairinin dünya görüşünü belirleme noktasındaki kapsayıcı konumu üzerinde durulmuştur. Muhyiddin İbnü’l-Arabî, Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî ve Yunus Emre’nin şiir hakkındaki kanaatleri ve sûfî şairler üzerindeki önemli tesirleri hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Sûfî şiirin kimler tarafından anlaşılıp kimler tarafından anlaşılmadığı konusuna açıklık getirmeye çalışılmıştır.
