Examining the effect of menopausal symptoms on general health status in postmenopausal women

Abstract

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to examine the effect of menopausal symptoms on general health status in postmenopausal women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our study is a descriptive type study. It was conducted on 223 women aged 45-65 who applied to a family health center between October and November 2019 and at least 12 months had passed since their last menstrual period. A personal information form developed by the researcher, Menopause Symptom Scale (MSDS) and General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ-28) were distributed to women who agreed to participate in the study. Descriptive statistics are used for individual information during statistical analysis of data. Chi-square test was used to evaluate the data obtained by counting. RESULTS: The mean MSDS score for women was 22.72. In the General Health Survey, it was determined that the subsections most affected by menopausal symptoms experienced by women were somatic symptoms, anxiety, sleep disorders and depression, social functioning and depression. Highly significant positive relationships were found between the Menopause Symptoms Assessment Scale and its subscales experienced by women and GHQ-28. CONCLUSION: Menopause symptoms seen in postmenopausal women affect the general health of women. Women registered at the family health center need to plan menopause education and train regularly.
