Midwifery Students’ Attitudes Toward Sexual Health: A Cross-Sectional Study in Niğde

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to determine the attitudes of midwifery students toward sexual health and to examine the relationship between these attitudes, sociodemographic characteristics, and sources of sexual health information. Methods: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among midwifery students at Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University during the fall semester of the 2025–2026 academic year. Data were collected via a Google Form shared through WhatsApp groups, after obtaining written informed consent from the participants and in accordance with ethical principles. The Personal Information Form and the Sexual Health Attitudes Scale for Youth (SHAS-Y) were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests with SPSS version 26.0. Results: A total of 249 students participated in the study. The mean total SHAS-Y score was 145.43 ± 16.36, indicating that students generally had positive attitudes toward sexual health. Among the subscales, the highest scores were observed in Decision-Making and Responsibility, Communication and Rights, and Sexual Rights, while the lowest scores were found in the Awareness and Self-Confidence subscales. Students who identified the internet and healthcare institutions as their primary sources of sexual information had significantly higher attitude scores compared to others (p<0.05). Conclusion: Although midwifery students’ attitudes toward sexual health were generally positive, there is a need to strengthen the awareness and self-confidence dimensions. Structuring educational programs to specifically address these aspects is important for improving both students’ personal sexual health and their professional competence.
