Humanistic Behavior Skills and Emotional Labor Behaviors in Patient Care of Intensive Care Nurses

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between humanistic behavior skills and emotional labor behaviors in patient care of intensive care nurses. Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional and exploratory study. 232 intensive care nurses were included in the study. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Humanistic Practice Ability of Nursing Scale (HPANS), and the Emotional Labor Scale for Nurses (ELS). This study adhered to the STROBE checklist for reporting. Results: The average age of intensive care nurses was 30.27±4.52, and 54.3% were female. The mean total score on the ELS was found to be 3.93±0.54. The mean scores for the superficial behavior, deep behavior, and sincere behavior sub-dimensions of this scale were found to be 3.92±0.63, 3.90±0.59, and 4.02±0.63, respectively. The mean score for the HPANS was determined to be 120.42±15.40. The mean scores for the sub-dimensions of this scale nursing communication skills, psychological adjustment skills, skills in applying ethical and legal issues, aesthetic nursing skills, and practical care skills were found to be 28.78±4.13, 16.04±2.69, 29.68±4.20, 11.92±1.96, and 33.98±4.68, respectively. A strong positive and statistically significant correlation (r=0.643; p=0.001) was found between the ELS and the HPANS. Conclusions: Intensive care nurses were found to have high emotional labor and humanistic behavior skills in nursing practice. Nurses were observed to exhibit the highest level of sincere behavior in patient care. It was determined that as the emotional labor behaviors of intensive care nurses increased, their humanistic behavior skills also increased. Care strategies that take into account emotional labor and humanistic behaviors should be developed to maximize individualized care practices in nurses.
