Abstract
Osmanlı tarihinin ilk defa dönemlere ayrılması XIX. Yüzyılın ikinci yarısında Ahmed Vefik Paşa, daha sonra ise Abdurrahman Şeref Bey tarafından yapılmıştır. Bu dönemlendirme daha sonra yazılan ders kitaplarında da yer alarak günümüze kadar gelmiştir. Ancak bu tasnif sadece Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nun askeri başarılarına göre yapıldığı için imparatorluğun diğer cephelerinin ekonomik, bürokratik, kültürel vs. dönemlendirilmesine uymamaktadır. Osmanlı tarihinin bütün yönleri dikkate alınarak yeni bir dönemlendirmenin yapılması gerekmektedir.
Abstract
The modern periodization of Ottoman history was first invented in the second half of XIXth century by the celebrated Ottoman intellectual Ahmed Vefik Pasha and Abdurrahman Sherif Bey. This scheme was then borrowed by many of his successors and found its place into history textbooks. Within time, this organistic periodization dividing Ottoman history into units like birth, rise, decline and death has been popularized and commonly accepted both by popular and academic historiography. However , as its primary concern was on military success of Ottoman State, other sectors of life like economy, bureaucratic administration, cultural etc. do not exactly fit in to this framework mentioned above. This study aims to reconsider the conventional periodization of Ottoman history used in Ottoman and early Republican textbooks.
