Abstract

Osmanlı hilâfeti XVIII. yüzyılda dış gelişmelerin, XIX. yüzyılda da daha çok iç gelişmelerin etkisiyle geçmişle kıyaslanmayacak oranda gündeme geldi. Bu vesile ile Osmanlıların hilâfet anlayışları, kullanılan kavramlar ve meşruiyet temelleri hususunda önemli veriler ortaya çıktı. Aynı dönemde Osmanlı hilâfetinin kuvvet ve zaaf noktalarını gösteren önemli tartışmalar yapıldı. Bu makalede şimdiye kadar bir arada ele alınmayan bu veriler değerlendirilerek Osmanlı Devletinin son iki asrında hilâfet tartışmalarının seyir çizgisi ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışıldı.

Abstract

The issue of Ottoman caliphate became one of the important subjects of periodic discussions during the last two centuries of the Ottoman State. Primary sources of this period provide significant information about the Ottoman concept of the caliphate, the titles used for it and what principles the Ottoman caliphate was based on. These discussions also revealed the strong and weak sides of the Ottoman caliphate. This article is an attempt to shed some light on issues like the emergence of the modern question of caliphate, internal and external developments that shaped the Ottoman sultans’ concept of caliphate and how the institution of the caliphate was used by the sultans of this period.
