The Effect of Demographic, Social and Physical Activities of the First Year Medicine Faculty on School Performance

Abstract

One of the important points for increasing students' school success is increasing physical and social activity activities. The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of the effects of lifestyles, habits, social and physical activities of the first year medical students on the school performance. 20 questions were sent to each student via google document via e-mail. The course grade of the first year medical students was obtained from the first board exam and compared with the questions. A total of 149 people participated in the study, 91 of whom were male. The residence places of the students were 56 (37.6%) houses, 53 (35.6%) dormitories, 40 (26.8%) apart hotels. Smoking was present in 36 (24.2%) and alcohol was used in 86 (57.7%). Regular habits of students; 100 reading (67.1%), regular sports (56.6%) and regular artistic activity (117.5%) were present. The average grade of the students was 0-55 in 8, 55-65 in 33, 65-75 in 60, 75-85 in 44, and 85-100 in 4 patients. It was seen that regular attendance had a positive effect on grades, but other habits and social life except smoking had no effect on the school performence. No relationship was found between with school performance and gender (p: 0.157), place of residence (p: 0.081), alcohol use (p: 0.096), regular reading (p: 0.946), participation in regular artistic activities (p: 0.308) and the frequency of daily phone use (0.494). Student learning is a complex process and a single study method may not be suitable for all situations. In our study, regular participation in classes contributed positively to school performance while negative impact of smoking was observed. Other habits and social life had no effect on the course grade. However, we believe that if this study is conducted over several years, different results can be obtained.

Tıp Fakültesi 1. Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Demografik, Sosyal ve Fiziksel Aktivitelerinin Okul Performansı Üzerine Etkisi

Öz

Öğrencilerde okul başarısı için önemli noktalardan birisi fiziksel ve sosyal aktivite etkinliklerinin arttırılmasıdır. Çalışmamızın amacı 1. sınıf tıp fakültesi öğrencilerinin yaşam tarzları, alışkanlıkları, sosyal ve fiziksel aktivitelerinin ders notları üzerindeki etkisinin araştırılmasıdır. Hazırlanmış olan 20 soru her öğrenciye google dokuman üzerinden mail ile ulaştırıldı. Tıp fakültesi 1. sınıf öğrencilerinin ders notu 1. kurul sınav sonucu elde edilerek sorular ile karşılaştırıldı. Çalışmaya, 91’i erkek toplam 149 kişi katıldı. Öğrencilerin ikamet yerleri, 56’sında (%37,6) ev, 53’ünde (%35,6) yurt, 40’ı (%26,8) apart otel idi. Alışkanlıkları açısından bakıldığında, 36’sında (%24,2) sigara, 86’sında (%57,7) alkol kullanımı mevcut idi. Düzenli kitap okuma 100’ünde (%67,1), düzenli spor 56’sında (%37,6) ve düzenli sanatsal faaliyet 117’sinde (%78,5) mevcut idi. Öğrencilerin notların ortalaması 8’inde 0-55, 33’ünde 55-65, 60’ında 65-75, 44’ünde 75-85 ve 4’ünde 85-100 arası idi. Derslere düzenli olarak katılmanın ders notlarına pozitif etkisi saptanırken sigara kullanımının negatif etkisi olduğu görüldü (her ikisi içinde p<0.005). Cinsiyet (p: 0.157), yaşadıkları yer (p: 0.081), alkol kullanımı (p: 0.096), düzenli kitap okuma (p: 0.946), düzenli sanatsal faaliyetlere katılım (p: 0.308) ve günlük telefon kullanımı sıklığı (0.494) ile okul performansı arasında bir ilişki tespit edilmedi. Öğrenci öğrenimi karmaşık bir süreçtir ve tek bir çalışma yöntemi tüm durumlar için uygun olmayabilir. Düzenli olarak derslere katılımın notlara pozitif etkisi olduğunu ancak sigara dışında diğer alışkanlıkların ve sosyal yaşamlarının ders notu üzerine etkisi olmadığı görüldü. Ancak bu çalışmanın birkaç yıla yayılarak yapılması durumunda farklı sonuçlar elde edilebileceği düşüncesindeyiz.
