Abstract

This study was conducted with an experimental design to evaluate the effects of participation in art and sports activities on the social and mental well-being levels of nursing home residents. The study was conducted based on a random assignment model with a post-test control group. Within the scope of the study, a sample of 30 participants (18 females and 12 males) with an average age of X̄=70 ± 9.85 for females and X̄=74 ± 8.51 for males was used. Participants were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group received regular art and sports activities for eight weeks. At the end of the implementation process, data were collected from both groups through Demographic Information Form, Social Well-Being Scale and Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale Short Form. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 program. Frequency and percentage distributions were calculated within the scope of descriptive statistics and normality assumption was tested. Since normality was ensured, the differences between the post-test scores of the experimental and control groups were analyzed by t-test. The results of the analysis showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms of social well-being levels (p>0.05). On the other hand, a significant difference was found in favor of the experimental group in mental well-being levels (p <0.05). This finding reveals that although art and sports activities do not have a significant effect on social well-being in the short term, they can increase mental well-being by contributing positively to the mental and emotional processes of individuals. The results obtained can be interpreted as that such activities can support the mental health of elderly individuals by activating cognitive and emotional regulation mechanisms.

Sanat ve Sporun İyileştirici Gücü: Huzurevi Örneği
