Insuline Like Growth Factor 1 Secretion in Children with Protein Energy Malnutrition

Abstract

Serum Insuline like growth factor 1 IGF 1 and Growth hormone GH levels were compared in moderate and severe protein energy malnutrition PEM with healthy subjects of the same age group In PEM IGF 1 levels were extremely low p lt;0 001 when GH values were not different from the control group p gt;0 05 In moderate and severe PEM serum GH and IGF 1 levels were similar p gt;0 05 There was not any correlation between plasma IGF 1 value and GH total protein but a significant negative correlation was observed between weight loss and IGF 1 levels It was concluded that the serum IGF 1 level decreased independent to the GH value and that energy rather than protein loss played an important role in the decrease of serum IGF 1 level Key words: Protein Energy Malnutrition Growth Hormone Igf 1

Öz

Orta ve ağır derecede protein enerji malnütrisyonunda PEM serum insüline benzer growth faktör 1 IGF 1 ve Büyüme hormonu BH düzeyleri aynı yaş grubundaki sağlıklı çocuklarla karşılaştırıldı PEM de serum BH değeri kontrol grubundan farklı değilken p gt;0 05 IGF 1 düzeyi oldukça düşük idi p lt;0 001 Orta ve ağır derecedeki PEM de ise serum BH ve IGF 1 düzeyleri birbirine benzerdi p gt;0 05 nbsp; Plazma IGF 1 değeri ile HB total protein arasında korelasyon bulunamazken ağırlık kaybı ile IGF 1 düzeyi arasında anlamlı negatif bir korelasyon saptandı p lt;0 05 PEM de serum IGF 1 düzeyinin BH değerinden bağımsız olarak azaldığı ve serum IGF 1 düzeyinin azalmasında protein kaybından çok enerji kaybının önemli rolü olduğu sonucuna varıldı Anahtar kelimeler: Protein Enerji Malnütrisyonu Büyüme Hormonu Igf 1
