Pain and Analgesia in the Newborn

Abstract

In this review we mention anatomical requirements for pain perception and their development in fetal life In order to understand the basis of analgesic usage pain control systems of body are discussed It is known that newborns even preterms are capable of pain perception Measurement of pain is of crucial importance to use effective analgesia In the literature behavioral body movements crying facial expressions complex behavioral responses and physiological changes cardiorespiratory hormonal metabolic associated with pain were investigated By using these parameters effects of pain on newborns are searched Interventions used to prevent pain in newborn are divided into two as non pharmacological and pharmacological methods Non pharmacological measures can be useful in prevention of light pain whereas pharmacological measures are necessary in cases of intense pain In conclusion it must be remembered that newborn even premature babies are capable of pain perception and analgesia in newborn must be taken into account seriously Key words: Newborn Pain Analgesia
