In the full term infants the replacement of urine volume and sodium and free water to compensate for insensible water loss through evaporation comprises the fluid volume and composition adequate to maintain birth weight without excessive weight loss 10 over the first few days of life However the difference in the body composition of premature babies and the immaturity of their skin and renal functions render fluid replacement therapy difficult These maturation deficiencies continue for a short period during postnatal life During this period fluid and electrolyte therapy must be based on the infant s physiological needs and overloading should be avoided The daily weighing of premature infants and the determination of plasma and urine electrolyte and osmolality levels are important parameters in the monitoring of hydration and dehydration in these babies Key words: Newborn Fluid Electrolyte Therapy
