Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of pretreatment thrombocytosis in epithelial ovarian cancer.Material and methods: Between 1993 and 2006, 391 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, which were treated, are evaluated retrospectively. The platelet count >400.000/mm3 accepted as a thrombocytosis. To analyze statistically used Anova Table Test and Chi-Square test.Results: The mean age of the patients was 59.7 years (27-90) and the mean of the pretreatment platelet count was 364.000/mm3 (59.000-991.000). 32% of patients had pretreatment thrombocytosis. The stage, pretreatment CA 125 levels, presence of ascites and volume of ascites were affected by pretreatment thrombocytosis. While the recurrence rate was high in patients with thrombocytosis, disease free survival time, overall survival time and survival rate was not found to be related with thrombocytosis.Conclusion: Thrombocytosis can be marker of tumor aggresivity. The malignancy must be kept in mind for patient with pelvic mass and thrombocytosis.
