Attitudes Toward Immigrants Among Social Work Students in Türkiye: A Cross-Sectional Study
Abstract
This study aims to examine the attitudes of social work undergraduate students in Türkiye toward immigrants and to identify the perceptual factors associated with these attitudes. Based on a descriptive survey design, the study employed a quantitative research method. The sample consisted of 426 students enrolled in social work programs at public and private universities in Türkiye during the 2024–2025 academic year. Data were collected using a socio-demographic information form, a 20-item thematic questionnaire measuring perceptions toward immigrants, and the Negative Attitudes Toward Immigrants Scale (NATIS). The results revealed that the majority of participants held neutral or negative attitudes toward immigrants. In particular, students who endorsed negative beliefs regarding immigrants’ economic effects, impact on the education system, socio-cultural conflicts, and public health risks reported significantly higher NATIS scores. These results suggest that social work education in Türkiye does not sufficiently strengthen core professional values such as human rights, equality, and anti-discrimination. Future studies should examine the underlying causes of these prejudices in greater depth through qualitative methods. Additionally, social work curricula should be restructured through a more holistic approach that incorporates media literacy, cultural competence, and critical thinking.
