Abstract

Osmanlı tarihçiliğinde son 20 yılda karşımıza çıkan en dikkat çekici gelişmelerden biri Osmanlı çevre tarihinin yükselişidir. Araştırmalarını hem Türkiye’de hem de Türkiye dışında yürüten pek çok genç Osmanlı tarihçisi, çalıştıkları dönem ve konu ne olursa olsun –fakat özellikle imparatorluğun son yüzyılı– ya doğrudan çevre tarihi perspektifinden yola çıkarak ya da en azından çevrenin Osmanlı siyasal, toplumsal ve ekonomik tarihi üzerindeki olası etkilerini dikkate alarak tezler, kitaplar, makaleler ve bildiriler ürettiler. Bu da Osmanlı tarihçiliğinde onlarca yıldır farklı açılardan tartışılan kimi meselelerin yeni bir perspektifle ele alınmasını ve bir dünya bağlamına yerleştirilmesini mümkün kılıyor. Bunun son dönemlerdeki en önemli örneklerinden biri Zozan Pehlivan’ın 2024 yılında Cambridge University Press’ten yayınlanan kitabı The Political Ecology of Violence’tır.

Abstract

One of the most striking developments in Ottoman historiography over the past 20 years has been the rise of Ottoman environmental history. Many young Ottoman historians conducting research both in Turkey and abroad have produced theses, books, articles, and conference papers —regardless of the period or subject they study, though particularly regarding the empire’s last century— either by adopting a direct environmental history perspective or by at least considering the potential impacts of the environment on Ottoman political, social, and economic history. This has made it possible to reexamine certain issues that have been debated in Ottoman historiography for decades, now through a new perspective and within a global context. One of the most significant recent examples of this is Zozan Pehlivan’s book "The Political Ecology of Violence", published by Cambridge University Press in 2024.
