Hellenistik ve Roma Dönemleri’nde Batı Anadolu’nun en önemli liman kentlerinden biri olan Smyrna, çağdaşı pek çok kent gibi Geç Antik Çağ’da hem siyasi hem de kültürel değişimler geçirmiştir. Hıristiyanların Milano Fermanı ile inançlarını özgürce yaşama olanağına kavuştuğu MS 4. yüzyılın başından, tüm antik dünyada MS 7. yüzyıldan itibaren etkili olan Arap akınlarına kadar olan süreçte Smyrna’da Erken Hıristiyanlık kültürü yayılmaya başlar. Bununla birlikte bu dönemde Pagan inanç ve kültürünün de tamamıyla ortadan kalkmadığı görülmektedir. Smyrna Antik Kenti Basmane mevkiinde gerçekleştirilen kazılarda ortaya çıkarılmış olan pişmiş toprak bir oinophoros kentin Geç Antik Çağ’daki kimliğine ve dönüşümlerine ait izler taşımaktadır. Oinophoros’un sağladığı veriler, tarihsel arka plan ve benzer örnekler çerçevesinde yorumlanarak Smyrna’nın Geç Antik Çağ’daki kültürel hayatına ait bulgulara ulaşılmaya çalışılmıştır.
