Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion Therapy in Diabetic Pregnancies

Abstract

Aim: One of the ways to reach target blood sugar levels in diabetic pregnancies who need insulin therapy is multiple doses of insulin (MDI) injection and the other one is insulin pump which is provided by continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). The aim of our study was to evaluate the results of two different insulin administration methods in our follow-up pregnant cases.Material and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the data of maternal and fetal outcome points in pregnancy cases in our diabetes and pump outpatient clinics. 155 cases with type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) who were followed in the diabetes clinic were screened about CSII and MDI injections. Results: In the CSII group, three (13.6%) pregnancies resulted in abortion and 19 cases (86.4%) gave birth to an average weight of 3516.3 ± 681.6 gr. Two (18.2%) pregnancies in the MDI injection group resulted in abortion and 9 cases (80.8%) gave birth to an average of 3411.7 ± 240.9 gr.Conclusion: Pregnant diabetics who need to use insulin can use either CSII or MDI injection. However, the quality of life of both the mother and the baby must be taken into account during pregnancy
